The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Pompidou Centre in Paris and M+ in Hong Kong have formed a cultural alliance. The three institutions signed a framework agreement at M+ on 30 October in the presence of trustees and stakeholders from all three museums.

Founded in 1929, 1977 and 2021 respectively, the museums will pool their collections for jointly developed exhibitions and programmes, and deepen their collaboration on curatorial research and conservation, according to a joint statement. Together, they draw ten million visitors a year and reach 125 million people online. Each will retain its own identity and independence.

Christophe Cherix, MoMA’s David Rockefeller director, said the alliance made the three museums ‘embassies for each other’, bridging three continents.

Laurent Le Bon, president of the Pompidou Centre, said no single institution could encompass global creative practice and that the alliance would enable long-term loans and a fuller presentation of key artists and movements.

Suhanya Raffel, M+ museum director, said the alliance brought the perspectives of Hong Kong and Asia into the dialogue and would push the sector towards a more collaborative, sustainable future.

The Pompidou Centre, which is closed for renovation until 2030, signed its own multi-year partnership with M+ in May.
