Qatar Museums has announced the creation of a new permanent structure designed by and for the German artist Gerhard Richter.
Set to be unveiled later this year during the inaugural edition of the Rubaiya Qatar Quadrennial, the Doha Pavilion: Gerhard Richter will be a permanent installation near the Museum of Islamic Art inside MIA Park.
Built in collaboration with Selldorf Architects, each of the building’s six outdoor panels will be wrapped with decorative tiles echoing his 2011 artist book Patterns. Richter’s stone sculpture Brunnen (Well) will sit at the entrance. Inside, two floor-to-ceiling mirror installations alternate with paintings from his Strip series, while the 2023 Strip-Tower will be placed at the centre of the pavilion.
Richter credits the idea for the structure to a trip to Doha in 2013, when he was developing the Strip concept. The city’s architecture and history inspired him to create a space that would unite the different elements of that series together.
Imagined as a fixed expansion of the artist’s practice, the Doha Pavilion: Gerhard Richter is another addition to the country’s growing art ecosystem, which has gained significant attention this year with the inaugural edition of Art Basel Qatar.
