The London Museum (formerly Museum of London) will move to its new home in Smithfield Market, Farringdon on 28 November, eleven years after announcing its relocation, reports Museums Association. Its first programme will be titled London Tastes, and is curated by baker and writer Ruby Tandoh, with Jonathan Nunn, founder of food publication Vittles and author of London Feeds Itself.
The redevelopment cost a total of £437m, and was accumulated through both public funding and philanthropic donations from the likes of Bloomberg Philanthropies, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Goldsmiths Foundation.
Smithfield Market, a near-derelict building when redevelopment began, is a renowned example of Victorian architecture. Its renovation was overseen by Stanton Williams and Asif Khan, collaborating closely with conservation firm Julian Harrap Architects. The site will also encompass a series of shopfronts surrounding the area, which will be leased to partner institutions.
The new London Museum will also have an expansive day-to-night programme, also developed with local collaborators.
